Nigerian hip hop artist, Onome Onokohwomo, better known by his stage name Yung6ix, has called out fellow Nigerian music sensation Davido, contesting his assertion of being one of the first young artists to attain fame.
The controversy arose when Davido, during a recent interview, expressed his thoughts on the current wave of stars in the Nigerian music industry, positioning himself and Wizkid as the frontrunners of the movement.
However, Yung6ix, in a now-viral video, took a direct jab at Davido, firmly stating that he was not among the artists making waves when he himself began his musical journey.
With a mix of respect and disagreement, Yung6ix addressed Davido, highlighting the order of their rise to prominence.
“David, David, how many times I call your name?” Yung6ix began. “See, you know I got nothing but love for you, my boy, but this right here is nothing but a little bit of truth-telling. So, let’s get it straight.”
Yung6ix continued to emphasize that before Davido, there were already established figures making waves in the industry. He mentioned Wizkid, known as the “Starboy,” and Ola, undoubtedly Olamide, as the pioneers.
Yung6ix asserted that they, along with himself, were the “big hommies” of that time, the young artists who paved the way for the newer generation.
“So, it was Wiz, it was Ola, and it was 6ix before it was you,” Yung6ix proclaimed. “There were a lot of people that had motion. A lot of people. But the big hommies. We were the youngins. You feel me?”
Injecting a touch of humor into his message, Yung6ix playfully questioned whether Davido had started smoking “on colos,” a colloquial term for a particular substance.
“No tell me say you don dey smoke on colos. Nooo David. David, I dey stay California where (colos) na legit. Everybody dey (smoke) standard,” Yung6ix quipped.
The unexpected response from Yung6ix has sparked widespread discussion within the Nigerian music industry and among fans.
