The Nigeria Police Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has explained why Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, was handcuffed after turning himself in to the police.
PUNCH METRO reported that Kuti reported himself to the police after a viral video of him assaulting a police officer on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State emerged on Saturday.
The singer was handcuffed after turning himself to the Lagos State Police Command, it was reported that he was accompanied by a lawyer representing Falana and Falana Chambers, the law firm of popular human rights activist, Femi Falana, SAN.
Following this, a section of Nigerians have continued to question the police why they handcuffed Kuti even after submitting himself to the police.
In response, the police spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a tweet on Tuesday stated that handcuffing any suspect before detention is standard procedure.
“It seems you are not familiar with detention? With this question. Anyway, it’s a normal procedure before detention,” he tweeted.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, had ordered Seun’s arrest after a video of the musician assaulting a policeman surfaced online.
