The Police Service Commission has responded to the disturbing incident involving musician, Seun Kuti, who was captured on video assaulting a police officer on duty.
The PSC commended the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, for swiftly ordering the arrest of Kuti, emphasizing the need for prompt prosecution to serve as a deterrent to others.
The viral video shows Seun Kuti wearing a red shirt and white trousers, aggressively slapping and pushing the police officer.
Throughout the assault, he repeatedly taunted the officer, asking, “You dey mad?” (Are you insane?).
Expressing their disappointment, the Chairman of the PSC, Solomon Arase, stressed that regardless of the offense, no one, including Kuti, has the right to assault a law enforcement officer carrying out official duties.
Arase firmly condemned Kuti’s audacity in physically attacking the officer, emphasizing that Nigeria is not a society where violence makes right.
Arase was quoted in a press release by PSC’s spokesperson, Ikechukwu Ani, “We must uphold our civility by utilizing established channels for lodging complaints against alleged infractions by law enforcement officials, rather than resorting to uncouth behavior like assaulting the country’s symbol of authority.”
Arase further commended the police officer for demonstrating remarkable restraint in the face of such provocation, as any retaliatory action could have had dire consequences.
The PSC’s strong stance sends a clear message that acts of violence against law enforcement officers will not be tolerated.
The commission expects the legal process to be expedited, ensuring that Kuti faces appropriate consequences for his actions.
This firm response aims to deter others from engaging in similar acts of aggression, reaffirming that everyone must be held accountable for their actions, regardless of their social status or profession.
