Former Nigerian head of state, Yakubu Gowon, has stressed the need for improved healthcare training for professionals and long-term, cost-effective investment in healthcare infrastructure to ensure Nigerians can access quality medical care.
BusinessDay reported that Gowon made this statement during the 50th-anniversary ceremony of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital in Benin City with the theme, “ Advancing the legacy of quality healthcare”
During this ceremony, the former head of state also called on healthcare professionals and other stakeholders to prioritize the delivery of high-quality healthcare that is accessible, affordable, and fair to everyone.
He recognized that the healthcare industry is constantly evolving, and as such, healthcare providers must adapt and innovate to meet the ever-changing demands of patients.
As the chairman of the occasion, Gowon called on healthcare professionals and stakeholders to renew their commitments to delivering top-notch healthcare to all Nigerians. He urged them to work together to establish a healthcare system that is accessible, affordable, and equitable to all.
In his words, “Let us continue to invest in our healthcare infrastructure, train more healthcare professionals and provide the necessary resources to ensure Nigerians have access to the best medicine possible.”
Speaking about the anniversary, Gowon said, “This is a significant milestone not only for the hospital but for the old Midwest, Edo and Delta. This is not only for Edo state but for the entire nation as UBTH has been a cornerstone of healthcare delivery in Nigeria since its inception.
“As we look back over the past five decades, we can stride in the tremendous progress that has been made on healthcare in Nigeria, and UBTH has been at the forefront of this progress providing world-class medical care to Nigerians and training the next generation of healthcare professionals.”
Yakubu Gowon revealed that he had contributed to the establishment of the hospital and that his wife had officially commissioned the institution during his time as head of state on May 12, 1973. Gowon commended UBTH for exceeding their expectations by providing excellent medical care for the sick and suffering.
The governor of Edo-State, Governor Godwin Obaseki called for a more efficient and practical model for financing educational institutions in Nigeria by engaging in strong partnerships with the private sector. He urged stakeholders to work collaboratively to identify and address the challenges facing the healthcare industry, particularly in terms of funding and infrastructure.
The Chief Medical Director of UBTH, Darlington Obaseki, during the ceremony, highlighted the hospital’s accomplishments over the past 50 years. He emphasized that UBTH has implemented groundbreaking medical treatments, innovative medical equipment, modern processes, and technology to offer effective health solutions to patients.
