The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control in Nigeria, has extended the probe on the ‘Special Chicken Flavour’ Indomie Instant Noodles’, to other brands.
PUNCH METRO reported that NAFDAC launched a probe of the brand after the Malaysian and Taiwan governments flagged it as carcinogenic.
In a report by The PUNCH, the agency insists the locally produced brands of the noodles do not include ‘Special Chicken Flavour’, and its importation has remained banned for years.
Though many fear that some unscrupulous persons may still seek to get them into the country, the country’s drug and food regulatory body said it was aware of its responsibility to protect the public’s health.
According to the Director General of NAFDAC, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, the agency has concluded plans to investigate other brands of instant noodles offered for sale to Nigerians.
“We use this medium to assure the public that a thorough investigation of the products will be conducted both at the factory and market levels and our findings will be communicated.”
She reaffirmed that NAFDAC registration status was granted to the Indomie instant noodles products and other brands of noodles certified by the agency following a thorough regulatory system covering all facets of Good Manufacturing Practise.
“The Ports Inspection Directorate is also on heightened alert to guard against the importation of the implicated product into Nigeria,” Adeyeye said.
