Sonia, daughter of embattled former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, has reacted to her parents’ sentencing in the United Kingdom.
Recall that, the UK Court on Friday sentenced Ekweremadu to nine years and eight months inprisonment, while his wife Beatrice and Obinna Obetta got four years and ten years jail terms, respectively.
The sentence became the first of its kind under the Modern Slavery Act, following their conviction for organ trafficking in March, which lasted for six weeks.
Ekweremadu, Beatrice and Obeta were convicted of conspiracy to arrange the travel of a young Nigerian man, David Nwamini, to Britain in order to exploit him for his kidney.
The kidney organ was intended for Ekweremadu’s sick daughter, Sonia, who was in need of a kidney transplant.
Speaking to BBC on Friday, Sonia said she was devastated, broken and she disagrees with the conviction.
She said, “It’s sad. It’s been really hard to wrap my head around it. I understand the conviction. Personally, I disagree with it; however, that’s from a very biased perspective as their daughter, and I would obviously back my parents.
“However, the law has taken its course, and we just have to now move forward as a family.”
