Following the mass burial of 33 people who were massacred by bandits on Saturday night, normalcy has been restored to the Runji Sakwab Community, located in the Atyap Chiefdom of the Zango Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
According to reports, the 33 people were murdered in their sleep and their homes were burned down, with 19 of the bodies burned beyond recognition.
Speaking at the mass burial ceremony, the Local Government Chairman, Mr. Francis Sani Zimbo expressed outrage at the occurrence, calling it an unwarranted attack on the people.
He claimed that Runji Sankwab was the third community in the Atyap communities to be attacked in a 30-day period.
While the local government has convened multiple security meetings to explore the causes behind the repeated attacks and provide viable remedies aimed at putting an end to the slaughter, Zimbo lamented that their efforts were all futile.
The council boss remarked, “our hands are tight and there are no options left for us again but to seek for solutions and help from outside our immediate scope through the help of the media.”
He also asked well-meaning Nigerians and international organizations to help the affected people because their homes, numbering around 40, had been burned to ashes and assets, including food, had been destroyed.
Bishop Jacob Kwashi, the Local Government Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, encouraged the government to live up to its responsibilities of protecting lives and property during the mass burial rites.
As a result, Bishop Kwashi prayed for the rest of the souls of those who perished, as well as for the rapid healing of those who incurred varying degrees of injuries and those in critical condition.
In response to the tragic occurrence, State Police Public Relations Officer DSP Mohammed Jalige stated that his officers and other security operatives have since been sent to the area to guarantee that such bloodshed does not occur again.
