Suspected armed robbers invaded the Ogun phone market popularly known as Computer Village in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Wednesday and reportedly killed one of the traders.
The armed men, numbering about eight stormed the computer village located in the Okelewo area of the state capital.
According to an eyewitness, the armed men who were also suspected to be cult members trailing their member arrived at the phone market and started shooting sporadically which prompted traders to run for safety.
Daily Post reported that at some point, the traders summed up courage and went after their attackers and subsequently got one of them arrested.
Confirming the incident, the Ogun State police spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, stated that the police “successfully repelled the armed robbery gang.”
Oyeyemi disclosed on Thursday morning that “the armed robbery gang stormed the market at about 5:30 p.m, started shooting sporadically and carted away expensive phones.”
He explained that a distress call was made to the police at Ibara division and the DPO of Ibara division, CSP Abayomi Adeniji, immediately mobilized his anti-robbery and surveillance teams, in collaboration with men of the Amotekun corps to the scene.
He hinted that while the robbers sighted the police, they started firing at the force men “but due to the superior firepower of the policemen, the hoodlums took to their heels.”
The suspects were chased out of the market with the aid of the traders while a 32-year-old Adeniji Sakiru was apprehended.
He said, “Unfortunately, one Dayo Bankole, a trader in the market, who was shot by the robbers gave up the ghost while receiving treatment at the General Hospital Ijaye Abeokuta,” adding that assorted criminal charms” were recovered from the arrested suspect.
