The Ondo State Police Command has revealed that Olorunfemi Tope, a 35-year-old man who was slain in a mob attack in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, was not an internet fraudster as claimed and reported.
PUNCH METRO reported that Tope was killed in the Ijoka area of Akure after his vehicle allegedly crushed four people to death on Monday morning.
It was learned that the deceased was apparently trying to flee when he was stopped by locals.
An eyewitness claimed that Tolulope was driving a Toyota along the road when all of a sudden his Toyota Camry automobile went off its lane and crushed the victims who were riding okada, or commercial motorcycles.
It was said that sympathizers who raced to the site to help the driver discovered various fetish objects inside the vehicle, raising the possibility that the driver was a ‘Yahoo boy.’
Angry at what they witnessed in the automobile, sympathizers jumped on the driver and beat him into a coma. and eventually passed away.
The 35-year-old man’s vehicle was also set on fire.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, who confirmed the incident, stated that only two fatalities could be confirmed, while the injured were transported to the hospital for treatment.
The PPRO said, “No one can confirm if the young man in question is an internet fraudster. There was an accident that led to the death of a motorcyclist, and rather than people around to help, some resolved to jungle justice by killing the young man who drove the vehicle and set the car ablaze. But for the quick intervention of the police, his parents too would have been killed. In all, two people were confirmed dead while those injured in the accident are currently in the hospital.”
