South African murderer, Thabo Bester nicknamed “Facebook Rapist”, who feigned his death to flee prison, has been captured in Tanzania, as reported by DailyMail on Monday.
Bester, who used Facebook to lure at least two women whom he later assaulted, was also convicted of murder. He was given a life sentence in 2012, and in May 2022, it was widely reported that he died in a fire that consumed his prison cell.
However, after reports emerged that he had been spotted in Johannesburg, an investigation was launched. DNA tests revealed that the charred remains found in the cell were not his.
Two weeks ago, the police announced a manhunt for Bester, and last week they raided a lavish house in an upscale Johannesburg neighborhood where he was believed to be living.
Bester was caught with Ms. Magudumana, and a Mozambican citizen suspected of assisting them to evade law enforcement and cross borders. They had several unstamped fake passports when they were arrested, about six miles from the Kenyan border.
Authorities have begun extradition procedures to bring the fugitives back to South Africa, where they will face numerous charges.
Justice Minister Ronald Lamola confirmed Bester’s apprehension, stating that “an official delegation from South Africa, comprising senior officials from the police and the department of justice and correctional services, will depart for Tanzania on Sunday.”
