A boat carrying passengers from Yenagoa to Okpoama in the Brass local government area of Bayelsa State sank on Thursday, leaving a lot of people unaccounted for.
Daily Trust reported that the incident took place along the Okoroma River in the state’s Nembe local government region.
Before sinking in the middle of the river, it was rumored that the wooden boat was carrying both passengers and cargo.
Several of the parents who were onboard the boat have been looking for their lost children.
As of the time the report was filled out, the number of casualties was not yet known because the rescue effort was still going on.
The chairman of the maritime union workers in Bayelsa State, Ipigansi Ogoniba, verified the occurrence and said they have already sent rescue team to the scene.
However, when contacted, the police spokesman for Bayelsa State, SP Asinim Butswat, stated that the Nembe local government police division had not been notified of the occurrence.
