The Canadian government has stated that visitors who receive credible job offers while in the country would continue to be allowed to apply for and obtain work permits without leaving the country.
While announcing the development, the Canadian government stated that the two-year extension will last till February 28, 2025. It also explained that the interim solution was implemented to solve the country’s labor shortfall.
According to a statement on the Canadian Immigration website, this temporary regulation provides visitors an alternative for Canadian employers, many of which are experiencing severe labor shortages during this moment of economic growth.
In addition, visitors applying under this policy who held a work permit within the past year will continue to be allowed to request an interim work authorization to begin working for their new employer sooner.
To be qualified to apply for this temporary public policy, the Canadian government stipulates that applicants must:
Have valid status in Canada as a visitor on the day they apply.
Have a job offer that is supported by a labour market impact assessment (LMIA) or an LMIA-exempt offer of employment.
Apply for an employer-specific work permit no later than February 28, 2025.
Meet all other standard admissibility criteria.
