At least 32 persons were killed and another 85 were injured after two trains collided and derailed near the Greek city of Larissa on Tuesday.
A spokeswoman for the fire department stated that many carriages left the rails shortly before midnight following the collision between the two trains; one was reported to be carrying 350 passengers and the other freight, around halfway between Athens and Thessaloniki.
“Thirty-two people have been found dead,” spokesman Vassilis Vathrakogiannis told reporters, adding that efforts to rescue people still trapped were ongoing.
“Of the 85 people injured, 53 people remain in hospital.”
The cause of the collision between the two trains is still unknown.
The disaster is being referred to as the “worst railway accident Greece has ever known” by Greek media.
