In Ilorin, Kwara State, an 80-year-old woman has been killed in a burning building worth N80m.
According to the Kwara State Fire Service, the fire incident happened at 43 Adegboye Street, behind the Federal Secretariat, Fate area, Ilorin, Ilorin East Local Government.
The head of media and publicity for the state fire service, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed the occurrence in a statement stating that the fire was reported by a man by name Mr Oni on Sunday at about 3pm.
According to the statement, “It has not yet been determined what started the fire. One flat in the building, out of its four flats was impacted.
“Due to delay in distress call, the raging fire caused major damage to the structures and a woman of around 80 years old was removed from the building and thought dead before the spread of the fire was contained and subsequently suppressed,” the statement read.
A residential building at Olanipekun Hospital, located next to Oyeleke Memorial College in the state of Offa, reportedly caught fire earlier.
A two-story building with roughly 16 beds was affected in the incident. The inferno caused the full destruction of eight bedrooms.
According to the fire department, the overall estimated value of the property salvaged during the event was roughly N62.8 million, while the estimated value of the property lost was N17.2 million.
Residents were urged by the state fire service to increase their awareness of safety at home.
