Football fans and sports lovers across the world have been thrown into a state of mourning as rescue workers confirm the death of Ghanaian Footballer, Christian Atsu.
The player was declared missing after the 7.8-magnitude quake that rocked Turkey and Syria on February 6.
Around 43,000 people have been reported to have been killed in the natural disaster.
Atsu, who plays for Turkish club, Hatayspor, was initially said to have been found, a report which was later confirmed false.
In a latest development, the body of the player has been round under the rubbles by rescue workers.
His manager, Murat Uzunmehmet, in an interview with newsmen stated,“We have reached his lifeless body. His belongings are still being removed. His phone was also found”.
Reacting to the development, popular sport journalist, Ben Jacob, tweeted, “So sad to hear Christian Atsu has passed away. His agent has confirmed he was found dead under the rubble following the earthquake in Turkey.
Thoughts with his family and friends, and all those affected by the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.”
Also female International sport journalist, Usher Komugisha, tweeted, “Unfortunately, Christian Atsu has been found dead in the Turkish rubble following the devastating earthquake almost a fortnight ago.
Condolences to his family, friends and Ghana as a country. Tragic.”
A Ghanaian football fan on Saturday morning tweeted, “It’s sad Christian Atsu couldn’t be found and is declared dead. I wish I watched him play for the Black Stars again “.
@Elvis Tunde, while recounting the last goal of Atsu, which he scored for his club, hours before the earthquake tweeted,”Christian Atsu scored a beautiful last minute free-kick goal for his club few hours before the earthquake and today he’s confirmed dead, I hate how fickle life is.”
Also, @Imane Ouaadi, tweeted, “Sad news this morning as Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu has been confirmed dead two weeks after the devastating earthquake in 🇹🇷
My heartfelt condolences go to his family & loved ones to his fans & to the entire Ghanaian Nation.May he rest in eternal peace.
#RIPChristianAtsu”.
