Manchester City have issued a statement in response to the trending news that they are facing over 100 charges from the Premier League over alleged financial breaches.
PUNCH Metro had reported that PL issued a statement on Monday, stating that City had been found to have broken rules across nine seasons, starting from 2009 to 2018.
The reigning league champions have been the subject of a four-year investigation, which was delayed by legal challenges. But the PL, on Monday, announced that the alleged breaches have been referred to a commission leaving the club facing a range of potential punishments if found guilty.
However, City, in a more recent statement issued on Monday, claimed that they are “surprised” by the news, saying that they have provided “extensive engagement” with the Premier League over the investigation.
They reiterated that they “welcome the review” by an independent commission.
The club statement read, “Manchester City FC is surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL has been provided with.
“The Club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent Commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position. As such we look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all.”
