Recently, the Canadian government had placed a ban on foreigners buying properties in the city.
This has pushed the housing sector to crisis, so stated Kenneth Osadolor, a Canadian-base Nigerian.
In a report from Punch, the cost of accommodation has witnessed a surge thereby leaving an average family to struggle to be able to afford a roof over their head.
Osadolor, in an interview with Punch revealed that foreigners who seek permanent residence will come and buy a property and leave and no one will investigate the source of their income whereas those residing in Canada, the source of their funds is regulated.
Although the policy is to enable Canadians own a home but Nigerian politicians, through their Realtor will buy a house and shoot the rent, thereby making accommodation more expensive.
“Most of the houses now are empty and people are using them for Airbnb. Many are leaving Toronto for places like Alberta because they can’t afford houses there anymore. Rent used to be about 600 CAD monthly, now it’s up to 1,000 and 1,200 CAD with utilities,” he added.
