The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has arrested a bank official for withholding new naira notes at the Automated Teller Machine port.
This was disclosed through a statement by the agency on Saturday its official Twitter page.
It was reported that the Complaince Team of the ICPC in Oshogbo Osun State arrested the Operation Manager of First City Monument Bank for refusing to remove wrappers from the newly redesigned notes loaded inside the Automated Teller Machine.
The team visited the bank and discovered that the new naira note loaded into the ATM machines were still wrapped in nylons which prevented the money from getting to people.
The tweet reads “ICPC Compliance Team in Oshogbo has busted an FCMB in Osogbo, Osun State where some ATMs were loaded with cash with their wrappers un-removed, thus preventing the cash from being dispensed. ”
However, they immediately passed the message of its immediate removal and instructed that cash be loaded appropriately.
According to the tweet “The Team therefore directed that the wrappers be removed, and the cash loaded properly.”
When the ICPC followed up on this bank, they found out that they still left the unwrapped cash inside one of their ATMs against the order of the team.
The ICPC reported on friday night that they have arrested the Operation Manager of the Bank for further investigation and questioning.
“The Operation Manager of the Bank was arrested and taken in for questioning,” ICPC said.
The new development spurred reactions on Twitter such as “I’m so happy you mentioned the name of the bank. Most media houses in Nigeria won’t mention their name. They will write “a new generation bank, ”@ENIBOY.
“Until you work in a bank, you’d never understand why they did that. I totally do. If only Nigeria was governed the way banks manage their branches,” @Richiy3 replied to ICPC.
@prandy_moore said, “Omo nawao, This could just be cash management oh. Not as it’s reported. They may just be making sure they mange the cash they have.”
“It is wrong practice to keep cash in its strap inside the ATM canister. If you are managing it manage it from the Bank’s vault. All loaded cash must be accessible to customers,” @Ozazeelkponmwo1 replied.
