Afghanistan’s Taliban officials have “beaten and jailed” an academic, Ismail Mashal, who criticized their ban on women’s university education on live television
According to AFP, the veteran journalism professor, Mashal, caused a stir in December by ripping his degree credentials to tears on television in protest of the decree halting women’s higher education.
Mashal’s aide Farid Ahmad Fazli, while comfirming the incident said,“Mashal was mercilessly beaten and taken away in a very disrespectful manner by members of the Islamic Emirate”.
Also a Taliban official has confirmed the detention, according to the director at the Ministry of Information and Culture, Abdul Haq Hammad, “Teacher Mashal had indulged in provocative actions against the system for some time”.
