An Anambra State sex worker identified as Chisom has been reported to have died in a local hotel in Onitsha, Anambra State.
According to The PUNCH, it was reported that the deceased was found dead on Monday while cleaners swept her room.
The incident generated a lot of tension in the area as some claimed that the deceased was murdered while others argued that she committed suicide.
A source who observed the body prior to its removal at 2.10 p.m. asserted that the position of Chisom’s body suggested that he had been strangled.
According to a second source and the deceased’s coworker, she may have been strangled by an early visitor.
She noticed that the sex worker had a dispute with a client the week prior, who supposedly paid her, but she refused to grant him access because he threatened to sue her.
A 70-year-old local resident named Mama Chizoba said that sex workers made anything from N5,000 to N7,000 each night, depending on the socioeconomic status of their clients.
She was confused as to why the hotel owners let the other sex workers leave with their possessions before doing a thorough investigation.
She denied that the woman had committed suicide by hanging herself, adding that all the hotel’s call girls had questions.
She said, “It is painful that this kind of death will happen in a notorious hotel like this and the proprietors will allow the prostitutes living there to be vacating the hotel in broad daylight when the corpse of their colleague they claimed hanged herself has not been removed and investigated. Why are they running? How can somebody who hanged herself be standing with her legs touching the floor?”
The police from Onitsha’s Central Police Station, who arrived at the scene at 12.30pm, left with several hotel personnel, who subsequently returned.
Soon after, an ambulance from Onitsha General Hospital arrived and took the body away.
The Divisional Police Officer, Central Police Station, Onitsha, Ifeanyi Ibru, said investigations had begun.
“The police are aware and we are investigating the case; the corpse has been taken away,” Ibru added.
