A Hawaii man, Albert Schweitzer, who was sentenced to 130 years imprisonment for the 1991 murder, kidnapping and sexual assault of a woman visiting Hawaii was released today after spending 20 years behind bars.
Schweitzer’s attorney came up with fresh evidence that proved that his client did not commit the crime he was serving jail terms for.
Based on this, the judge, Peter Kubota ruled that Schweitzer should be released from his shackles immediately.
The judges rule lit the Hilo courtroom with joy as Schweitzer, who was flown to the Big Island for the hearing from the Arizona prison where he was serving his sentence, regains his freedom.
“My feelings were all over the place,” Schweitzer told the AP during a phone interview.
He explained that the justice system is flawed, adding that he is one of those who are imprisoned for crimes they did not commit. He, however, praised the judge for his ruling.
