The Kano State Government has confirmed four new cases of Lassa fever in the state.
Dr. Ibrahim Tsanyawa; the state commissioner of health disclosed that the 26- year- old index case of Lassa fever was admitted at Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital, on January 10, 2023.
He said that other three cases were from 10 samples gotten from the contacts who were at high-risk from index case, while three from the ten persons tested positive.
“The four confirmed cases are presently at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Isolation Centre,” the commissioner said.
This recent confirmation is coming after the state’s last confirmed case of Lassa fever was in January 2020. Three patients are already dead and 292 cases on the watch-list.
This adds Kano State’s health battle with the infectious Diphtheria.
Dr. Tsanyawa said that 100 suspected cases have been recorded and eight cases confirmed, while they’re still awaiting more results.
He also said that 27 patients were on admission and 41 others had been managed and discharged successfully.
He also stated that the state government in partnership with the Medecins San Frontiers (MSF) had set up a Diphtheria Treatment Centre at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in the state and appointment of Dr. Salma Suwaid, a consultant paediatrician, all hands are on deck to curb the infectious disease.
