Human rights advocate, Aisha Yesufu, has urged Nigerians not to be unnecessarily upset when the subject of divorce comes up.
She offered the advice following the viral video of actress Ireti Doyle discussing her legal divorce from her spouse, Patrick Doyle, in an interview with Chude Jideonwo.
“We are officially divorced,” she said.
Ireti added that some circumstances are out of one’s control and that she had no business getting married when she did.
In her words; “When you’re an adult, it’s not a life and death situation…there are some situations that are way beyond your control.”
“The truth of the matter is that I had no business being married at that time talk less of… let’s not even go to the choice of who I got married to.”
“There is a time to be silent and a time to speak. In this age where everything one says is scrutinised and quartered; it takes a certain level of trust to bare intimate details .. we are here now,” she wrote in an Instagram post.
Taking to her twitter handle, Aisha noted that marital longevity should not come before personal happiness.
She said: “We should learn to be comfortable with divorce. The longevity of a marriage should not be the prize.
“The prize should be happiness, fulfillment and mental wellbeing of the couple involved. Where it is no longer optimal, people can decide to go their separate ways and be happy.”
