The Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has voiced concern over the most recent attack on a train station in the Igueben Local Government Area of Edo State, during which armed men kidnapped an unspecified number of people.
Atiku remarked that the incident “is the latest in a long condemnable series of security breaches hitherto unmatched in our national history” in a press release sent by the Atiku Media Office on Sunday.
While expressing sympathy to the attack victims and their families, the presidential candidate said, “The thoughts of my family and I are with the abducted and their families as we pray for their safe return.”
“It is also vital to point out that this serves as the latest reminder on the urgent need to change our security architecture to better defend the lives and assets of the Nigerian citizens,” the speaker continued.
The PDP president candidate also favored “putting diplomatic pressures needed to prevent the unrestricted flow of light weaponry and assault weapons across the West African sub-region and through our borders.
We will significantly reduce the ability of terrorists to re-arm themselves to carry out attacks by doing this.
Following these policy recommendations, according to Atiku, would “significantly reduce the number of out-of-school children on our streets and improve the economy to create jobs for vast numbers of unemployed Nigerians, thereby reducing the pool from which these terrorists recruit people for their nefarious activities.
“I believe these actions will go a long way towards reducing incidents of insecurity and providing the secure environment needed for economic growth.” he added.
