The Food and Drug Administration in the United States of America, have revealed that pharmaceutical retails can now sell abortion pills such as Mifepristone and others.
Prior to this, only doctors, clinics and a few mail-order pharmacies can dispense the drugs.
According to New York Times, under the new FDA regulations, patients will still need a prescription from a licensed healthcare professional, but any pharmacy that agrees to accept those prescriptions and follow certain other requirements can dispense the medications in-person and by mail.
The change comes as abortion pills, already used in more than half of pregnancy terminations in the U.S., are becoming even more sought after in the aftermath of last year’s Supreme Court decision overturning the federal right to abortion
The FDA changed its website to reflect the decision and added to a list of questions and answers without making an announcement.
