A man, identified as Sagiru Wada, has been sentenced to death by a Kano State High Court over the death of his stepmother.
According to Daily Post, after reconsidering all facts in the case, the sitting judge, Justice Aisha Mahmud, convicted Wada under Section 221 of the Kano State Penal Code of killing his stepmother by hacking her into pieces with a sword.
She stated that she was pleased with all of the evidence presented in court, noting that the prosecution’s case had been proven beyond reasonable doubt.
Sagir was charged with murdering his stepmother, Zainab Dan-Azumi, with a sword eight years ago.
The defence counsel, lead by Barrister Rabi’u Abubakar, told the court that the suspect had mental health issues, but the court rejected his allegation due to evidence produced before it.
Prosecution lawyers, lead by Barrister Tijjani Ibrahim, stated that the court thoroughly examined the case and found no evidence to indicate the inmate was mentally ill.
However, the defense counsel stated that they will review the decision and take appropriate steps.
