Offices of the Local Education Authority were on Friday shut by Primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory.
According to Daily Trust, the teachers shut down the offices across the six areas councils of the FCT over alleged non-payment of their promotion arrears by the councils’ chairmen.
According to reports, the LEA offices’ main entrance gates in all of the local councils were locked.
Teachers and LEA staff were seen congregating in front of the office gates, and some staff members, including the secretaries for the LEAs, were prevented from entering their offices by NUT branch officials.
Despite a ministerial template stating that N30 million will be deducted each month from the Joint Account Allocation Committee for the payment of teachers’ arrears, some primary school teachers who spoke with our reporter lamented the non-payment of their promotion areas.
In response, the FCT secretary of the NUT, Comrade Margarethe I. Jethro, stated that the union had decided to order all of its branches to close the six area councils LEA offices due to the council chairmen’s failure to pay teachers’ promotion arrears.
