The Saudi Arabian monarch, Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, has declared Wednesday a public holiday in the country after the country’s national team won their Argentine counterpart at the 2022 Qatar World Cup on Tuesday.
The announcement was made on Twitter by Saudi Gazette, on Tuesday evening.
The historic match saw the Arabian side shockingly defeat World Cup favourites Argentina in Group C after an unbelievable performance.
Although, the Argentines were tipped to win, owing majorly to the fact that they had arguably the best player in the world at the moment, seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, Lionel Messi, yet they struggled to have a foothold in the game loosing all three points to a resilient Saudi Arabia.
The tweet read, “King Salman orders that tomorrow, Wednesday, will be a holiday for all employees in public and private sectors as well as students in all phases of education in celebration of #SaudiArabia’s stunning victory against Argentina in #WorldCup2022.”
Saudi Arabia have now played 17 matches at FIFA World Cups, losing 11 and drawing two. Saudi Arabia have only once progressed beyond the group stage at a World Cup in 1994
