The management of University College Hospital, Ibadan have revealed that about 661 clinical workers have resigned their roles from 2020 till October 15, 2022.
According to The PUNCH, the Chief Medical Director of University College Hospital, Ibadan, Professor Jesse Otegbayo, stated this on Monday, in Ibadan, at a media briefing to mark the 65th founder’s day of the hospital.
Otegbayo said, “Every week, I receive about 15 resignation letters; there are more nurses than doctors and pharmacists. The movement of health workers will continue for a while, I must confess, but the consequences are not going to be good for Nigeria because, in the next five years, we will feel full impart.”
However, he pointed out that committees to examine health worker retention had already been established by the Federal Ministry of Health.
He claims that the CMDs of the tertiary hospitals have also made recommendations on this to various committees, including requesting that the government guarantee a complete replacement of the staff that left.
According to Otegbayo, obstacles the hospital faced in providing training, research, and healthcare services included the high cost of diesel to the national grid’s constant supply of electricity, bureaucratic bottlenecks in replacing existing staffing, and low public perception and expectations.
