The United Nations has released $10.5million from the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund and the Central Emergency Response Fund to alleviate the impacts of the 2022 floods.
Statistics from the government have revealed that the devastating flooding was the worst in recent years.
Claiming more than 600 lives in different states, displacing at least two million people and destroying thousands of homes, the 2022 Cadre Harmonisé food security and nutrition assessment said 19.5 million Nigerians were already facing severe food insecurity as a result of the flooding from July till date.
Daily Lost reported that, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator, Matthias Schmale, recalled his experience during his recent visits to Anambra, Adamawa and Bayelsa, saying he saw people struggling to eat and get clean water.
In a statement by the world body on Friday, it stated that the financial aid would provide assistance to the victims, including those ravaged by terrorism in the North-East.
The statement revealed that the $10.5million NHF and CERF rapid response allocations would provide water, sanitation, health care, shelter and non-food items to the states most affected by flooding in Nigeria.
It targets 495,000 people in Anambra, Bayelsa, Kogi, and Niger, complementing efforts by the federal government and the Nigerian Red Cross/Red Crescent.
Schmale noted that the massive destruction of food crops would have implications on food security in the immediate term.
He said, “The urgent priority is to help affected people get back to what is left of their homes and to regain lost assets and livelihoods.
“Farmers for example, will require seeds and other agricultural support.”
