There was tension in Iyana-Iba, Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State as members of two rival groups of the Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers clashed.
As obtained in a viral video, some policemen were seen at the scene of the clash watching as the rival groups hurled bottles and other dangerous items at one another.
As seen in the video uploaded by a tweep on Wednesday, a man dressed in Ankara appeared to have taken a hit and was seen lying helpless on the floor.
Tweeps were quick to react to the video and while some condemned the clash, some condemned the police officers for allegedly acting unconcerned as the factions clashed.
One user, @Morris_Monye, tweeted at the state spokesman saying, “please can we have those Policemen questioned? Can’t believe how casual they are.”
This is just as another user, @sheddibynature, argued that the cops, about nine of them, couldn’t have done anything but dock for safety and call for backup.
“I honestly don’t think there is really anything these officers can do in this situation than first take cover for safety and then call for back up.,” he tweeted.
However, @sheddibynature’s comment caught the attention of the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who said, “Thanks for your objectivity. Back up indeed came and situation was brought under control. Further fracas was prevented. Area is calm. Situation monitoring is ongoing.”
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement on the clash from the state police.
