The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Asefon Adedayo, debunks reports that a recently convicted university student is an executive member of the union.
Adedayo made the rebuttal in a phone interview with The Punch on Saturday.
It was earlier reported that Abiodun, a student of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, who claimed to be the Director of Logistics of the Oye-Ekiti chapter of NANS was taken to the Oyo State High Court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission recently.
He was arrested in March with a NANS number plate.
Abiodun was eventually convicted and sentenced to one-year imprisonment for internet-related fraud.
He was arrested alongside 79 others and was convicted on Wednesday.
Negating Abiodun’s claim, the NANS president said some students and persons had begun using the NANS number plate as a cover for illicit and illegal dealings.
He further disclosed that he had made this known to the Nigeria Police, stating that he would reveal their collaborators who provided cover for them.
The NANS president said, “He is not a NANS executive. I have made it known; it is not today that we have bad eggs within us. There are people who are giving them the number plates and we will unveil their names soon.
“As I speak to you and as a President of NANS, that guy is never an exco of NANS at the level of the state, the zone or at the national level. So, he is not known to us as an exco of NANS.”
