A female journalist working with the Adamawa State Broadcasting Commission, Yola, Nafeesah Vandi has been brutalised by her husband who is a former worker of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria.
According to The Punch, the Nigeria Union of Journalists in the state has called for justice while urging the police to ensure diligent investigation and prosecution.
In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Donald Dedan; and Secretary, Fidelis Jocktan, the NUJ condemned the act, describing the assault of Vandi by her husband, Ibrahim Aliyu, as wicked and barbaric.
The union said it would not condone the beating of any woman to stupor, let alone a professional by her husband.
“Though the police have already swung into action in investigating and arresting the perpetrator of the domestic violence, the NUJ calls for a more speedy action into the investigation and prosecution of Mallam Ibrahim Aliyu, in accordance with the law and constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“The union further calls on national and international organisations like FIDA, UNFPA, UNICEF as well as civil society organisations that are propagating a total halt on violence against women, to step into the matter for justice to prevail,” the statement added.
