The President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, has sent a congratulatory remark to the President-elect of Kenya, Dr William Samoei Ruto.
In a statement released on his verified Twitter handle, Kagame hailed the peaceful conduct of the Kenya presidential elections held on August 9 2022.
Kagame noted that his government attached great importance to the good relationship and cooperation between Kenya and Rwanda.
He wrote, “On behalf of the Government and People of Rwanda, I congratulate our Brothers and Sisters, the People of Kenya, for conducting peaceful elections on 9 August 2022. I also congratulate H.E. Dr William Samoei Ruto, the President-Elect.
“The Government of Rwanda attaches great importance to the good relationship and cooperation between Kenya and Rwanda.”
Ruto defeated his major opponent, former Prime Minster, Raila Odinga with 50.49 per cent of the total vote cast (7,176,141), while the latter carted 48.85 per cent (6,942,930) of votes cast.
However, Odinga and four of the seven members of the electoral commission had rejected the electoral results.
The vice-chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, Juliana Cherera, challenging the result of the polls told BBC, “We cannot take ownership of the result that is going to be announced because of the opaque nature of this last phase of the general election.
“We are going to give a comprehensive statement… and again we urge Kenyans to keep calm. There is an open door that people can go to court and the rule of law will prevail,” she said.
