The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Monday extended its ongoing strike by four weeks to afford the Federal Government more time to resolve its issues.
According to a statement signed by the union’s president, Emmanuel Osodeke, the decision to extend the strike was reached after an emergency meeting of ASUU’s National Executive Council at the Comrade Festus Iyayi National Secretariat, University of Abuja, on Sunday, 31th July 2022.
The extension comes days after the Nigeria Labour Congress in collaboration with Civil Society Organisations organised a nationwide solidarity protest on 26th and 27th July 2022 against the ongoing strike which is in its fifth month.
Confirming ASUU’s decision, Osodeke said, “Following extensive deliberations and taking cognisance of Government’s past failures to abide by its own timelines in addressing issues raised in the 2020 FGN/ ASUU Memorandum of Action (MoA), NEC resolved that the strike be rolled over for four weeks to give Government more time to satisfactorily resolve all the outstanding issues.
“The role-over strike action is with effect from 12.01 a.m. on Monday, 1st August 2022.”
