Nigerians are flying high in the world of sports from football to athletics, weightlifting and lately the world of Judo, thanks to a Deputy Commissioner of Police, Tunji Disu.
DCP Disu represented Nigeria at the 33rd US Open Judo Championships and made the podium by claiming the Veteran Judo fighter Silver medal.
Punch Metro recalls that Disu is the commander of the Intelligence Response Team of the Nigerian Police Force who replaced the suspended DCP Abba Kyari who is being detained for his alleged involvement in a 25 kilogrammes cocaine deal as well as his alleged collusion in a $1.1 million Internet fraud perpetrated by a suspect, Abass Ramon, commonly known as Hushpuppi.
However, Joe Igbokwe led the list of compliments to Disu on his achievement via his Facebook page by uploading photographs from the event.
“DCP Tunji Disu Wins Silver Medal In US Open Judo Championships. Congratulations sir,” Igbokwe wrote.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala was crowned the 2022 African Women’s Footballer of the Year award in July, becoming the first player to win the continental award five times.
Oshoala’s feat was followed up by Oluwatobiloba Amusan who set a world record and won the gold medal in women’s 100m hurdles on July 25 at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Also, Weightlifter, Rafiatu Folashade Lawal, on Sunday, won Nigeria’s second gold medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games by coming first in the women’s 59kg Weightlifting category.
Folashade broke three games records to lift a combined total of 206kg.
Nigeria now has three medals in total in the competition, all from weightlifters; two golds and a bronze.
Punch Metro reported that Olarinoye Adenike Adijat won the country’s first gold medal by lifting a tournament record of 203kg in the Women’s 55kg category.
Edidiong Joseph Umoafia doubled the medal by clinching a bronze medal in the men’s 67kg.
