A tragic traffic accident in southern Mexico claimed 41 lives in the early hours of Saturday, according to a statement from the Tabasco state government.
Authorities confirmed that recovery efforts were still underway at the scene.
The accident involved a bus carrying 48 passengers, which collided with a truck. Local officials reported that 38 passengers lost their lives along with both the bus and truck drivers, bringing the death toll to 41.
Images captured by Reuters show the bus reduced to a charred metal frame after being consumed by flames following the collision.
“At present, only 18 skulls have been recovered, but there is still much more missing,” said security sources in Tabasco, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Recovery operations were ongoing at the time of the report.
Bus operator Tours Acosta expressed its condolences in a Facebook post, stating it was “profoundly sorry about what happened” and pledged full cooperation with authorities to determine the cause of the crash, including whether the bus was within the speed limit.
