At least 22 persons have been reported killed while 52 persons have been left injured after a bus crashed in Northern Senegal.
According to a national fire brigade official, the accident occurred in the village of Ngeune Sarre in the Louga region.
A rescue worker present at the scene expressed concern that the final number of fatalities may increase.
At the time of filing this report, the cause and time of the accident were not specified.
In January, a collision near Louga resulted in the loss of 19 lives and caused injuries to 24 individuals. In the previous week, a bus accident in Senegal’s capital city claimed the lives of about 40 people.
A wave of criticism against the government over the frequent accidents on Senegal’s roads and the lack of steps taken to prevent them followed that tragedy on January 8.
In response, the government made a number of announcements, including a restriction on overnight bus travel. However, experts in transport claimed that many of the solutions were impracticable.
