In an effort to treat and rehabilitate children with lower limb abnormalities, the Lagos State Government has announced that 213 children have been added to its Free Limb Deformity Corrective Surgery and Rehabilitation Programme waiting list.
According to The PUNCH, permanent secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye stated that 60 of them had undergone surgery previously.
“The limb deformity corrective surgery programme began in 2007 as a medical assistance programme for children with lower limb deformities that affect normal growth and function in children,” he said during a visit to the latest beneficiaries of the surgical intervention exercise at the Gbagada General Hospital on Wednesday.
“It has since evolved into a multidisciplinary surgical outreach programme that has reached more than 6,000 beneficiaries since its inception,” Ogboye said, according to a statement on Wednesday.
He added that the intervention programme was “to alleviate the suffering of children with limb deformities, improve their self-esteem and offer them a chance to compete and function normally in society.”
According to Ogboye, the most recent stage of the programme began with a screening process of prospective recipients at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.
He further stated that the outcome of the screening, which was evaluated by a group of experts, led to the selection of the latest group of 60 qualified beneficiaries who were subsequently scheduled for the surgical intervention.
