As the dust settles on Nigeria’s recent election season, an unidentified Nigerian in diaspora presumably feeling frustrated and disheartened has publicly denounced his Nigerian citizenship.
In an act of frustration following the chaos and corruption that occurred during the 2023 election, he tore his Nigerian passport into pieces and vowed never to have anything to do with Nigeria again.
In the video that circulated, the middle-aged man said, “Good evening fellow Nigerians. Having critically observed the way and manner the Nigerian election has been conducted so far, I have come to the conclusion that Nigeria can never be redeemed.
“As a result, I have decided to not be associated with anything called Nigeria.
In order to buttress my assertion, I hereby destroy my Nigerian passport. Thanks and God bless.”
For many Nigerians, the election season was a time of hope and true change after years of instability and economic hardship.
However, the reality of the situation quickly became apparent as reports of election rigging, voter suppression, and violence began to emerge.
But while his actions may be a symbol of his anger and frustration, they do not represent the only response to Nigeria’s political turmoil.
