Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, has revealed that the federal government evacuated 1,531 stranded Nigerians from Ukraine.
According to Daily Post, he stated this in Abuja at the 22nd edition of the Buhari Administration Scorecard Series (2015-2023).
It would be recalled that Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, in a major escalation of the war which began February 2014.
Among others, he said that over the past eight years, Nigerians in Libya, Mali, Sudan, Cote d’Ivoire, and Senegal received assistance.
According to the minister, more people, mainly women and girls, are falling prey to human trafficking in these nations.
In addition, he recalled the evacuation of over 100 citizens stranded in Russia following the 2018 World Cup.
The senior official claimed that Nigerians were recently evacuated from India and the United Arab Emirates
Onyeama also praised the International Organization for Migration for its assistance with the repatriations.
The UN organization provides migration-related assistance to governments, migrants, refugees, and internally displaced individuals.
