At least 10 people dead in cholera outbreak in Ndibokote village, Ezza Inyimagu, located in the Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Among the victims is a nursing mother, leaving behind her 9-month-old child.
According to The PUNCH, the outbreak, which began earlier in the week, has also left 20 other residents battling the disease but responding to treatment.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Moses Ekuma, provided an update during a visit to Iziogo Health Centre on Wednesday.
“Unfortunately, we have recorded no fewer than 10 deaths, but about 20 affected individuals are receiving treatment and showing signs of improvement,” Dr. Ekuma stated.
In response to the crisis, the state government has set up three emergency treatment centres at Iziogo Health Centre, Sudan Mission in Onuenyim, and Ndibokote village to manage the situation.
Dr. Ekuma praised Governor Francis Nwifuru for promptly approving funds to procure medical supplies to help control the spread of the disease.
“Governor Nwifuru has been very supportive, ensuring we have the necessary resources to contain this outbreak,” Dr. Ekuma noted. He also acknowledged the assistance of global health partners such as the World Health Organization and UNICEF.
