At least 10 people, including three children, lost their lives in a tragic accident that occurred late Tuesday night at Abule Osun along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, Lagos State.
Three other individuals sustained serious injuries.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday.
He revealed that the accident took place around 11 pm when a Toyota Sienna vehicle, overloaded with passengers, crashed into a stationary truck.
“The investigation revealed that the Sienna vehicle was speeding and did not notice the truck, which had occupied a portion of the road,” Oke-Osanyintolu explained.
According to LASEMA’s findings, the truck, laden with granite, had been parked on the road, reducing the available lane.
The Sienna, traveling at high speed, slammed into the truck from behind, resulting in a devastating loss of life.
“Ten people, including three male adults, four female adults, two female children, and one male child, lost their lives in this unfortunate incident,” Oke-Osanyintolu added.
“Three others, a female adult and two children, were critically injured and have been transported to a nearby hospital.”
Emergency responders from the Federal Road Safety Corps were on the scene before LASEMA arrived, rescuing the injured passengers and transporting them for medical treatment.
The bodies of the deceased are currently in the care of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit, which will handle further procedures.
The Toyota Sienna involved in the crash, bearing registration number BDG 342 FS, was later towed by LASEMA’s Lite Tow Truck to the FRSC station for further investigation.
This incident follows a fatal accident just days earlier, where two passengers died after falling from a moving vehicle along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Witnesses reported that the victims collided with a bridge after standing up in the vehicle.
Authorities continue to urge caution on Lagos roads, emphasizing the dangers of speeding and inattentive driving.
