RB Leipzig secured a spot in the German Cup semi-finals with a 1-0 victory over Wolfsburg on Wednesday, thanks to a second-half penalty from Benjamin Sesko.
After a lackluster first half, Wolfsburg nearly took the lead when Mohamed Amoura struck the crossbar shortly after the break.
Leipzig responded by increasing their attacking intensity, with Sesko narrowly missing a header from a David Raum cross before eventually finding the breakthrough.
The decisive moment came when Sesko’s cross struck the arm of Kilian Fischer, whose arm was only slightly away from his body. The referee wasted no time in pointing to the penalty spot.
The Slovenian forward confidently converted, sending the ball low to the left. This goal continued his impressive streak, as he has now found the net in all three of his German Cup appearances this season.
Leipzig, who have claimed two of the last three German Cup titles, now await their semi-final opponents, which could be reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen, three-time winners Stuttgart, or third-tier Arminia Bielefeld.
Bielefeld, who caused an upset by defeating six-time champions Werder Bremen 2-1 on Tuesday, remain the only team left in the competition yet to win the trophy.
Several German football giants have already been eliminated, including record 20-time winners Bayern Munich, as well as Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt, both of whom have five German Cup triumphs to their names.
The semi-final draw is scheduled for Sunday, with the final set to take place in Berlin on May 24.
