The European Commission has vowed to take decisive action in response to new trade barriers, following United States President Donald Trump’s announcement of an impending 25% tariff on European imports.
Reacting to Trump’s statement, a Commission spokesperson affirmed that the EU would not hesitate to counter any unfair trade restrictions.
“The EU will react firmly and immediately against unjustified barriers to free and fair trade, including when tariffs are used to challenge legal and non-discriminatory policies,” the spokesperson stated.
Trump, speaking at a cabinet meeting, confirmed that his administration had settled on a tariff rate for EU goods.
“We have made a decision, and we’ll be announcing it very soon, and it’ll be 25%, generally speaking, and that’ll be on cars, and all of the things,” he said.
He further claimed that the EU was created “in order to screw the United States.”
The European Commission dismissed this assertion, emphasizing the mutual benefits of transatlantic trade.
“The European Union is the world’s largest free market. And it has been a boon for the United States,” the spokesperson countered.
Highlighting the advantages the U.S. derives from European trade, the Commission noted that “the EU has facilitated trade, reduced costs for U.S. exporters, and harmonized standards and regulations across 27 countries.” Additionally, the spokesperson pointed out that “U.S. investments in Europe are highly profitable.”
Reaffirming its stance on fair trade, the EU extended a hand for cooperation while making it clear that it would defend its interests.
“Europe stands for dialogue, openness and reciprocity. We’re ready to partner if you play by the rules. But we will also protect our consumers and businesses at every turn. They expect no less from us,” the Commission stated.
