The Taraba State Government has announced the temporary closure of the Danbaba Suntai Airport in Jalingo to facilitate modernization works.
The closure, which has received approval from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, is effective immediately, with operations expected to resume on December 20, 2024.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by Kwantar Genesis, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transportation Development.
The statement explained that the closure is necessary to ensure the timely and safe completion of ongoing construction projects that commenced in January 2024.
The projects include the installation of drainage systems, construction of a perimeter fence, runway extension from 2.4 kilometers to 3 kilometers, upgrade of the Instrument Landing System, and procurement of two new fire tenders.
“These upgrades demonstrate the Taraba State Government’s dedication to enhancing transportation infrastructure,” Kwantar noted. “The improved facilities will not only serve commuters within Taraba but also strengthen connections with neighboring states.”
While acknowledging the inconvenience the closure may cause, Kwantar appealed for public understanding, emphasizing the long-term benefits of the improvements.
“We appreciate the patience of our commuters during this period. These efforts are aimed at ensuring a safer and more efficient travel experience for all,” he said.
The statement reiterated the government’s commitment to meeting the December 20 deadline for reopening the airport.
